Climate Conference is officially open

The opening of the United Nations Climate Change Conference 2007. Photos Swan Ti/OxfamToday, the United Nations Climate Change Conference, officially started in Bali. The opening session – which is normally guided by a strict protocol and reading of official statements – was brought to life with the performance of the song “Dunia Berbagilah (World Let’s Share)”, by the United Voices of Indonesia, a group of popular Indonesian pop singers led by songwriter Nugie.

Take a look at the highlights of the first hour of the conference with our slideshow of photos taken by Ng Swan Ti.

“Open your eyes and ears, and begin to share…The world is calling all of us to make a change”, are just some of the words sung by Nugie and United Voices of Indonesia. You can listen to the full version of Dunia Berbagilah as a MP3 or watch a interview we did with Nugie, straight after the performance at the opening of the conference, on our Youtube channel

Nugie’s words, underlined and echoed statements of Yvo De Boer, UNFCCC Executive Secretary, who in his opening address said, “Nobody can hide from climate change. The poorest of the poor will suffer most – in every case.”

Also speaking was outgoing COP (Conference of Parties) chair who also observed that impact of climate change is already happening, and that action to date are out of step with the urgency of action that are required.

Indeed, the world is expecting rich countries – responsible for the majority of historical greenhouse gas emissions that caused global warming – to make a quantum leap forward and commit to rapidly and drastically reducing greenhouse gases, and agree on resources and practical action to support adaptation.

My colleagues will be blogging everyday with news, updates and events from the Bali Conference. So keep coming back help us Fight Climate Poverty together.

United Voices of Indonesia, sing to fight climate change

The United Voices of Indonesia perform Dunia Berbagilah (World Let’s Share). Photo Rully Prayoga/OxfamIndonesia’s Minister for Environment, Rahmat Witoelar, joined Oxfam’s Ari Margiono and songwriter Nugie, in Jakarta, to officially launch the song “Dunia Berbagilah (World Let’s Share).”

The song was written by renowned Indonesian musician Nugie, and performed by “The United Voices of Indonesia”, a special one-off grouping of Indonesia’s 50 top singers, musicians and performers.

Nugie wrote the song, as he wanted to inspire and motivate people to work together to tackle climate change, and to raise awareness about the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference.

The launch was lively and well attended by journalists, who were treated to a live performance of the song and saw videos that Oxfam has produced with the people of the Indonesia island of Tanimbar. In the videos villagers of Tanimbar discussed how they have already been affected by changing weather patterns, and what they have had to in their communities and lives to adapt to them.

Climate Conference inspires a song

Popular Indonesian Musican NugiePopular musician and entertainer Nugie, has had a long involvement in promoting environmental issues in his home country of Indonesia. After a recent meeting with Oxfam staff about the current and potential impacts of climate change on people living in poverty, Nugie wrote and recorded the song “World, Let’s Share Together” to raise the profile of Climate Change, in the lead-up to the United Nations Climate Change Conference, which will be held in Bali, Indonesia in December.

Not satisfied with recording the song by himself, Nugie, has gathered more than 60 top Indonesian musicians and singers, to take part in a new version and video of “World, Lets Share Together”. Please listen to Nugie’s amazing song and read the English tranlsation below.

We are proud to work with Nugie on this great song and can’t wait to see the finished video.

World, Let’s Share Together

Look around you, water is fading to nowhere

Does it move your heart?

Look around you, empty eyes of hunger

Does it touch your soul?

While we are here, too greedy to consume without knowing the limit

Look around you, green forest is turning into desert

Does it touch your heart?

Look around you, they shattered to survive

Does it pound your heart?

While we have everything here,

Can we survive if we start act now

Share with the burning Earth, Earth Need us

Share with the Earth Every little thing will be felt

Share with the world

Open your eyes and heart to share

Let’s share

Reach your hands, never doubt my friend

the world is calling for us to act for Our Earth

For the sake of life we live once, for our one Earth
